To understand Core Mini, you must first understand the ZBrush ecosystem. The full version of ZBrush (now part of the Maxon family) is an industry standard for film, game, and toy design. It handles millions of polygons with ease. pixologic zbrush core mini
is a free, stripped-down version of the industry-standard digital sculpting software, ZBrush. It’s aimed at beginners, hobbyists, and artists who want to try 3D sculpting without the complexity (or price) of the full ZBrush. As of May 30, 2025 , ZBrushCoreMini is
Because you cannot manually reduce polygons (Decimate), you can only subdivide roughly 3 to 4 times before Core Mini slows to a crawl. You cannot create a hyper-realistic 4k film monster; you can create a low-poly stylized character. It handles millions of polygons with ease
You cannot control the subdivision manually. You also cannot use ZRemesher (the auto-retopology tool). This means your models will end up with messy wireframes that aren't suitable for animation. But for a static sculpt for 3D printing? It doesn't matter at all.
Pixologic ZBrushCore Mini is not a "demo"—it is a fully functional sculpting tool. It serves as a digital sketchpad, stripping away the math and science of 3D modeling to leave nothing but the art. Whether you are blocking out a creature for a movie or designing your first D&D miniature, Mini offers the most accessible entry point into high-end digital sculpting available today.
Originally, Pixologic launched "ZBrushCore" (a paid, $179 USD version). Later, to compete with other free sculpting apps like SculptGL and Blender’s sculpting tools, they released "ZBrush Core Mini" as an even lighter, zero-cost entry point. While the paid ZBrushCore adds more brushes and export options, Core Mini remains the most frictionless way to experience Pixologic's core brush engine.
