The screenplay is tight. Every action Peyton takes has a logical (to her) motivation. The film also subtly addresses themes of maternal anxiety, postpartum vulnerability, and the fear of a stranger gaining access to your most intimate spaces. The subplot with the friend with Down syndrome (a brave portrayal for 1992) adds emotional weight and a sense of justice.
