This externalization made the stakes feel high and cinematic. Love was a —career, geography, family, and the ticking clock of a plane departure—rather than an internal one of self-knowledge. The message was intoxicating: if you just find the right person and fight hard enough for them, all other problems will melt away. There was no room for the banal reality that two perfectly nice people might simply be wrong for each other.
