The heart of the map is the Tonle Sap Basin, a vast depression that expands and contracts seasonally. Topographically, this region is exceptionally flat, with minute elevation changes. During the monsoon season, the topography allows the Tonle Sap River to reverse its flow, swelling the lake from roughly 2,600 square kilometers to over 16,000 square kilometers.
