Before the glitz of Bollywood, Sanu was Shanu Bhattacharya, performing at local shows and even in bars in Kolkata and Bengaluru. His big break came when the legendary noticed him and introduced him to the composer duo Kalyanji-Anandji. It was at their suggestion that he changed his name to Kumar Sanu—partly because his style was so heavily influenced by his idol, Kishore Kumar.
