Unbeknownst to the group, local police had been monitoring their activities and had set up a roadblock to intercept them. At approximately 23:30 hours, the militants encountered the police roadblock on a forest road. A confrontation ensued, during which one of the police officers, Werner P., was shot and killed by the militants. Another officer, Günter S., was severely injured.
